Apple and Samsung head to court as report on ‘iPhone 5’ launch date surfaces

Apple was the talk of the tech world Monday as the company headed into court with rival Samsung and a report surfaced on a date for the launch of its newest iPhone.

The website iMore.com said the tech giant’s newest smartphone model (expected to be called iPhone 5) will be unveiled on Sept. 12 and that Apple will also announce its iPad mini on that date.

“This information comes from sources who have proven accurate in the past,” the website said.

The devices may then be available as soon as Sept. 21, it said.

The iPad mini is expected to rival Amazon’s Kindle, Google’s Nexus and other smaller tablets that are better suited to reading, not surfing.

Meanwhile, Apple and Samsung Electronics – the world’s largest seller of smartphones – are taking each other to court over intellectual property infringement.

Apple buys much of its components from Samsung, but the two don’t have any cross-licensing agreements in place, according to BBCNews.

Apple first sued Samsung in April 2011, claiming Samsung ripped off the design of the iPhone and iPad as well as features like tapping the screen to zoom.

Samsung then filed a counter-suit, arguing Apple had used five of its patents without paying.

The jury trial began Monday in San Jose, California. It is expected to last at least four weeks.
