Transport truck crash closed 3 lanes of EB 401 in Ajax

A man was rushed to hospital with critical injuries after a crash involving three tractor-trailers on Highway 401 in Ajax on Tuesday night.

Three lanes of the eastbound 401 were closed at Westney Road for about nine hours for the cleanup and investigation.

One driver was rushed to St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto in critical condition. He was apparently driving the rig that sparked the crash. Another driver suffered minor injuries and the third was unhurt.

The crash happened just before midnight Tuesday. A heavy tow truck started hauling the wreckage of the trucks away from the scene around 5:30 a.m. Wednesday.

“Two tractor-trailers had originally stopped for construction up ahead and a third tractor-trailer, right at the last minute, swerved over to avoid hitting the second one, caught the corner of it, ripped the side of the trailer open,” OPP Sgt. Dave Woodford said.
