Hamilton police say a body was found in the rubble of a fire deemed an arson, and they are now treating the case as a homicide.
Police arrived at the scene on Main Street, east of Ashford Boulevard, on Saturday to find the 7-Eleven and two nearby vehicles fully engulfed.
At the time of the fire the store was closed for renovations and officers said a construction worker was missing.
“On Sunday, August 5th, police and the fire marshal’s office have discovered a body within the burnt rubble of this building,” Hamilton police said in a release.
“This male has been identified as 21-year-old Samir Anbari of Hamilton. Police are now investigating this matter as a homicide.”
An autopsy is planned for Monday.
Sami Karnaz, 30, has been charged with arson and disregard for human life. Those charges could be upgraded.
