Mississauga man drowns in L. Erie; Ajax canoeist missing in L. Ontario

The body of a Mississauga man who disappeared in Lake Erie over the weekend was found on Monday morning, police said.

The 43-year-old man has been identified as Walter Santos. He ran into trouble in the water off the main beach at Long Point provincial park in Norfolk County on Sunday, reportedly while he was swimming with his two children. Several people tried to help him, but the current was too strong.

His body was found around 9:30 a.m. Monday, police said.

Meanwhile, search-and-rescue aircraft are being used on Monday in the effort to find an Ajax man who disappeared while canoeing on Lake Ontario this weekend.

The 26-year-old missing man was canoeing with a 28-year-old man near the Whitby-Ajax border around 10:30 p.m. Sunday when the boat capsized.

Both men were wearing life jackets. The 28-year-old was the only one who made it back to shore.

Durham police dispatched its marine unit. A Hercules plane and Griffin helicopter from Trenton are also being used in the search. A York Regional Police helicopter is also being used to find the man.

On Sunday morning, the bodies of two brothers in their 20s were pulled out of Lake Ontario near Queen Street East and Victoria Park Avenue.
