Search resumes for missing canoeist in Lake Ontario

The search for a missing canoeist near Whitby has resumed, Durham regional police confirm.

The Durham Marine Unit will now search for the man, after a federal search involving a Hercules plane and Griffin helicopter was halted earlier Tuesday.

The missing man has been identified as 26-year-old Mustafa Ahmadi, of Ajax.

His shattered family wants the federal search to continue.

“For them it’s a body, for me it’s my brother…I want to see my brother buried. I can not let my brother’s body lie in the Lake,” said Homaira Ahmadi.

Ahmadi was on the water with a friend when their canoe capsized. The second man made it back to shore.

The canoe and paddles were located, and the investigation is ongoing, police say.

The long weekend was marred by tragedy on the water.

At least three people died and two others were presumed drowned after the civic holiday weekend.

Another search was expected to resume Tuesday on Lake Scugog. A man was presumed dead after he jumped off a house boat on Saturday and didn’t resurface.

Police found the body of a 43-year-old Mississauga man on Monday morning in Lake Erie. Walter Santos ran into trouble in the water on Sunday while he was swimming with his kids at Long Point provincial park in Norfolk County. Several people tried to save the man, but the current was too strong.

Emergency crews worked to save two brothers in their 20s who were pulled out of Lake Ontario, near Queen Street East and Victoria Park Avenue in Toronto early Sunday. The men were pronounced dead in hospital.

It’s believed the brothers were camping at the so-called secret beach at the R.C. Harris water treatment plant.
