Streep, Jones & Carrell team up for ‘Hope Springs’

Oscar winning actress Meryl Streep tackles the ups and downs of marriage in her new film Hope Springs.

Streep teams up with veteran actor Tommy Lee Jones, who plays her husband of 31 years. Trying to find a cure for their lifeless marriage Streep’s character, Kay Soames, enrolls the couple in a week-long therapy session lead by U.S. actor Steve Carrell.

Throughout the film Carrell’s character, Dr. Bernie Feld, takes them through a series of exercises that includes role playing and stepping outside of their comfort zones.

Carrell and his wife recently celebrated their 17th wedding anniversary, when asked if he learned anything new from the role he confidently said they didn’t need any tips.

“I think we’re doing pretty well on our own. But I think the movie is going to make her very happy,” said Carrell while smiling at his wife.

The movie effortlessly switches between humour and sorrow, which Carrell credits to Jones and Streep.

“It is all those things and certainly in part because the script is so good. But Tommy Lee and Meryl are amazing in it, so I think they bring it that extra depth,” Carrell told Reuters.

For Jones, Streep is one of the main reasons he said yes to the role.

“It was a good script about real people with real problems that seem to be really funny and it had Meryl in it,” said Jones.

“I think she’s the best living motion picture actor and I’m just glad to be her pal,” he added.

Hope Springs hits theaters on Aug. 8.
