Canada snagged two medals at the London Olympics so far on Thursday: a bronze in women’s soccer and a silver in women’s wrestling.
In soccer, Diana Matheson scored in the 92nd minute to beat France 1-0 in the third-place game. The result gives Canada its first Summer Games medal in a traditional team sport since 1936.
Matheson’s goal came after France dominated the second half and nearly went ahead in the 61st minute when striker Gaetane Thiney’s shot hit a post.
Canada had an excellent chance in the 15th minute but captain Christine Sinclair launched a pass from Rhian Wilkinson over the net.
France entered the game having outscored Canada 6-0 in their previous two meetings, including a 4-0 win at the Women’s World Cup.
Canada ended up playing for bronze after losing to the United States 4-3 in a semifinal marred by controversial officiating.
Meanwhile, Canada’s Tonya Verbeek could not prevent Saori Yoshida from winning her third straight Olympic wrestling title.
Verbeek will go home with a silver medal after losing to the Japanese star in the 55-kilogram final at the London Games.
The Canadian has reached the Olympic podium at the last three Games but has yet to win gold.
Verbeek, from Thorold, Ont., is winless in nine career meetings against Yoshida.
Verbeek won Olympic bronze in Beijing four years ago and took the silver at the 2004 Games in Athens.
Elsewhere at the Olympics:
- Diver Roseline Filion of Laval, Que. finished 10th overall in the women’s 10-metre platform. Montreal diver Meaghan Benfeito finished 11th overall.
- In women’s wrestling, Calgary’s Leah Callahan lost her opening match in the 72-kilo category to Burmaa Ochirbat of Mongolia and was later eliminated.
- Emilie Fournel of Lachine, Que., was sixth in the B final of the women’s K-1 500 kayak race. The result placed Fournel 14th overall.
- Toronto’s Zsofia Balazs finished 18th in the women’s open-water swimming event at Hyde Park.
- Damian Warner of London, Ont., finished fifth overall in the men’s decathlon.
Canadians took to Twitter to congratulate the Canadian soccer medalists. Here is a snapshot of some of their comments:
