Canada started the day off with a medal — the country’s 18th so far of the London Games — thanks to kayaker Mark de Jonge’s strong showing in the K-1, 200-metre event Saturday morning.

De Jonge had won both his heat and semifinal on Friday to advance to the final.

Team Canada was disqualified after finishing third in the men’s 4x100m relay, but it has filed an appeal.

Francois Coulombe-Fortier defeated Russia’s Gadzhi Umarov in the first round of the men’s 80-kg Taekwondo event. He was knocked out of medal contention later in the day after suffering a defeat to a competitor from Mali.

Diver Riley McCormick placed 12th in Saturday’s semifinal, pushing him into the 10-metre platform final event later in the day.
