Man facing impaired driving charges after fatal crash near Barrie

A 32-year-old man is facing impaired driving and fail-to-remain charges after a fatal crash near Barrie on Friday.

The three-vehicle crash happened just after 5 p.m. on Country Road 90, just west of Barrie. Police say a black Acura rear-ended a Hyundai, forcing it into oncoming traffic and it was then hit by a van.

The driver of the Hyundia, 36-year-old Jeremy Shakell, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the van suffered non life-threatening injuries.

Police allege the driver of the Acura fled the scene after the crash. Officers found him nearby, after his car ran into a ditch on Concession 10 in Essa Township.

Harold Gardner, 32, has been charged with impaired driving causing death, “over 80” causing death and failing to remain at the scene of a crash.

Gardner was scheduled to appear in a Newmarket court on Sunday.
