Mexico beats Brazil to win men’s soccer gold

Mexico fans celebrated in central London as their team beat favourites Brazil 2-1 in the Olympic men’s soccer final on Saturday.

Mexico won the title for the first time when they stunned Brazil 2-1 in front of 86,162 fans at Wembley Stadium.

Oribe Peralta put Mexico ahead after 28 seconds and added their second in the 75th minute with a header before Hulk replied for Brazil in stoppage time.

“I’m not surprised, I’m proud, with all my heart, because we came to the Olympics in London to win, we said we were going to win, and we won, because this is the flag; passion, love and land. And that’s everything,” said Luis

Angel Zamora, who watched the game wrapped in his national flag, in a Mexican restaurant in central London.

His cousin, who had also travelled to London for the Games, said he was already looking forward to Rio.

“Obviously everyone in Mexico is very proud now, the team won the gold, and now let’s see if in 2016 we can go to Brazil and beat them again on their home turf,” Ivan Arnaldo said.

The result was a bitter disappointment for hundreds of Brazilian fans packed into a central London bar.

Brazil, the hot favourite and desperate to win the only major soccer title to elude them, ended with the silver for the third time.

“Once again the national team is a disappointment. We were expecting to get gold. Let’s wait for the Rio Games in four years to see if in 2016 at home we can get the gold,” Brazilian fan Bruno said, as their 60-year search for the Olympic gold, which looked certain to end here, continues.

South Korea took bronze medal after they beat Asian rivals Japan 2-0 on Friday.
