‘Zeus smiled’ on Taste of the Danforth

“Zeus smiled” on the Taste of the Danforth on Sunday, festival spokesperson Howard Lichtman said, helping boost attendance records after a weekend of rain.

The Taste of the Danforth drew just under last year’s total of 1.3 million people, Lichtman said.

The 19th annual festival shut down car traffic on Danforth Avenue between Broadview and Jones, bringing food lovers to the city’s east end.

One young boy, clutching a souvlaki and wearing sunglasses despite the rain, said the festival was an annual tradition.

“I love this place! We come here every single year,” he said.

A 2010 study commissioned by the Danforth BIA showed the Taste of the Danforth generated $32 million in economic activity for the neighbourhood.

But the bad weather slowed things down this year.

“The rain affected everyone. There’s not too many people walking the streets,” one vendor said Saturday.

The massive event wrapped up at 8 p.m. Sunday.
