‘Check in’ the cellphone for restaurant discounts

One Los Angeles restaurant is so fed up with diners snapping smartphone photos and chatting during the meal that they’ve offered patrons a deal: hang up and get a discount.

Eva Restaurant is giving a five per cent discount for diners who check-in their smartphones, much like they would a coat.

The idea is getting mixed reviews in Toronto.

“There are places you go where it’s business and it’s accepted, but it depends on the culture,” a diner at Yorkville restaurant Sorrel told CityNews.

“You can’t change the new social paradigm that’s out there but you can be selective and respectful.”

Jimmy’s Coffee on Portland Street already has a no cellphone policy, as does O.Noir. The “dine in the dark” restaurant argues that the glowing screens interrupt the very atmosphere they’re trying to create.

What do you think of the idea? Let us know in the comments.
