Mapleton plane crash victims identified

Ontario Provincial Police have identified the four people who were killed in a plane crash in Mapleton, Ont., on Friday night.

Pilot Marko Misic, 20, and passengers Mohammed Shahnawaz Zia, 23, Wasay Rizwan, 27, and Victoria Margaret Luk, 19, all died in the crash. The men were from Toronto and Luk was from Mississauga.

Police said the group rented the four-seat Cessna from the Waterloo Wellington Flight Centre. They left the Breslau airport at 6:10 p.m., intending to fly to Toronto and Niagara Falls before returning to Breslau.

Misic crashed in Mapleton, about an hour north of Waterloo, around 8:30 p.m.

The emergency transponder was activated before the crash, police said, but it still took crews nearly two hours to reach the crash site.

The plane was found in a cornfield.

It’s not yet known what caused the crash, but police do not believe that weather was a factor.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada and the OPP are investigating.
