York regional police are reminding motorists to be careful and pay extra attention when driving through school zones as children return to class next week.
Operation ABC – Always Be Careful begins Monday with police increasing enforcement in and near school zones.
The traffic initiative is in partnership with the York Catholic and York Region district school boards and is aimed at educating drivers and students in pedestrian safety.
Motorists are being reminded to yield to pedestrians waiting to cross at crosswalks and to keep an eye out for children crossing the road, particularly when turning.
Officers will also be keeping an eye out for drivers who fail to stop at flashing school bus lights. Drivers are being reminded that the charge for failing to stop for a school bus carries a penalty of up to six months in jail and a $4,000 fine.
