Giller prize nominees announced

The nominees for the 2012 Giller Prize – awarded to the best Canadian English novel or short story – were announced Tuesday.

The list of 13 nominees include Everybody Has Everything by journalist Katrina Onstad and The Sweet Girl by former Giller finalist Annabel Lyon.

Will Ferguson, who has won the Leacock award for humour three times, was nominated for his novel 419.

This year’s jury, composed of Roddy Doyle, Gary Shteyngart and author Anna Porter, read 142 books submitted by 50 publishers from across the country.

The six finalists for the $50,000 prize will be announced in Toronto on Oct. 1

The award was established in 1994 by Toronto businessman Jack Rabinovitch in honour of his late wife, literary journalist Doris Giller. Scotiabank became a co-sponsor of the prize in 2005.  

Last year, the prize went to Esi Edugyan for her second novel Half-Blood Blues about black jazz musicians in Europe during the Second World War.
