30-50 millimetres of rain may blanket the GTA overnight

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for the GTA and surrounding areas due to significant rainfall expected overnight

A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for parts of the GTA  including Newmarket, Georgina, Northern York Region and Caledon.

Toronto, Halton-Peel and York-Durham among others are forecast to get 30 to 50 millimetres of by Saturday evening. A few areas may even get as much as 50 millimetres.

CityNews meteorologist Natasha Ramsahai said the GTA may be close to breaking a rainfall record for Sept. 8.

“That record currently stands at 26.4 millimetres, which was set in 1972,” she said.

This may also mean that Toronto will reach its expected monthly rainfall total.

“We’ve already seen 44 millimetres of rainfall for the month, which all fell on September 4th,” she said. “If we get another 30, 40 or 50 tomorrow we will have seen a month’s worth of rainfall over those two days. If we get 60, 70 or 80 tomorrow we will have seen a month’s worth of rainfall in one day.”

She said the GTA should expect spotty showers in early Friday evening, with the heavy rain expected to begin after midnight.

Environment Canada said some areas of southern Ontario may experience non-severe thunderstorms with heavy downpours.

The special weather statement is in effect for a number of areas outside the GTA including London and Niagara.

The rain is expected to bring cooler temperatures to the GTA over the weekend.

“On the back side of the system we stay cool for Sunday and Monday as well. Temperatures reaching 19 if we’re lucky,” said Natasha.
