Phase 3 of Regent Park revitalization project launched

Toronto Community Housing (TCH) said the third phase of its five-phase revitalization project for Regent Park — Canada’s largest public housing complex in the city’s east end — will focus on its youths.

Phase Three proposes the Regent Park Athletic Grounds consisting of a new soccer field, a cricket pitch and a basketball court.

The state-of-the-art sports facilities would be covered by fundraising proceeds and the Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment Team Up Foundation. There are plans to refurbish an existing ice rink with money from the Hockey Canada Foundation.

The third phase would also include three new city streets, more than 550 replacement rental social housing units and more than 2,000 market condos, the TCH agency said.

A new cultural centre and an aquatic centre are slated to open this fall, and a 2.4 hectare community park and community centre are currently under construction at Regent Park, which is undergoing a major facelift over 15 years.
