Hundreds take part in ‘Take Back the Night’ event

Hundreds took part in a ‘Take Back the Night’ event hosted by the Toronto Multicultural Women’s Centre and the Toronto Rape Crisis Centre, Saturday.

The event was in response to the recent rise of sexual assaults in Toronto.

The message of the event was to empower women to take a stand against sexual assault and to create a safe community environment.

“When you think about the statistic of only about six per cent of women ever report a sexual assault, we know that there are probably tons of women in the Christie area, in the Parkdale area, in the Kensington area that haven’t reported the sexual assaults,” Deb Singh, one of the event organizers, told CityNews.

A ‘Take Back the Block’ event took place immediately after where residents were invited to come out, meet their neighbours and leave their porch light on.
