iPhone 5 pre-orders top 2M in 24 hours: Apple

Sales of the iPhone 5 topped two million in 24 hours, Apple Inc. said Monday, despite the product not even being available on store shelves.

The pre-order sales of the smartphone broke a record previously held by the iPhone 4S. Customers bought one million of those phones in the first 24 hours.

“The customer response to iPhone 5 has been phenomenal,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice-president of worldwide marketing.

“iPhone 5 is the best iPhone yet, the most beautiful product we’ve ever made, and we hope customers love it as much as we do.”

However, because the demand for the phone was so high, some customer will see a later-than-expected delivery.

Most of the phones will be delivered on Sept. 21, the same day iPhone 5 is available in stores, and others will be delivered in October, the company said.

Apple unveiled its latest smartphone last Wednesday.

The iPhone 5 is taller, thinner and lighter than the 4S and features longer battery life and a fifth row of apps not including the permanent row at the bottom of the screen.

Among the 200-some features of iOS 6, the iPhone 5’s mobile operating system, is a new Apple-designed Maps app to rival Google Maps.

The iPhone 5 comes in either white and silver or black and slate and will cost $699 for the 16GB model, $799 for the 32GB model and $899 for the 64GB model.

Pre-orders began on Sept. 14.

About 244 million iPhones have been sold worldwide since the first one launched in 2007.
