OPP kick off seat belt campaign

GTA police forces, along with the OPP, kicked off a seat belt campaign Monday with a car seat clinic at Yorkdale mall.

The 13-day effort to ensure more drivers and passengers are buckling up runs through until Oct. 6. An estimated five lives are saved in Ontario each year for every one-per-cent-increase in seat belt use, police say.

Officers were inspecting children’s car seats at Yorkdale. Police estimate more than 80 per cent of the devices are installed incorrectly.

OPP officers will be increasing their presence on highways for the next 13 days to ensure every one is buckled up.

“Twenty per cent of all fatalities this year on OPP-patrolled roads are as a result of individuals not wearing or improperly wearing their vehicle restraints,” Chief Superintendent Don Bell said. “Every day OPP officers see needless injuries and deaths on our roads that could have been prevented by wearing seatbelts.”

Drivers can get a $200 fine and two demerit points for a seat belt infraction. Click here for more information on the province’s seat belt law.
