Justin Trudeau to run for Liberal leadership: reports

Justin Trudeau will announce his candidacy for Liberal leadership next week, according to reports in Montreal newspaper La Presse and Radio-Canada.

The son of former prime minister Pierre Trudeau is expected to make the formal announcement on Tuesday.

The party will select a new leader in April. Interim leader Bob Rae said in July he will not be seeking the leadership.

Rae’s surprise announcement in June renewed the rumours that have long surrounded Trudeau and earlier this month, Trudeau recanted denials that he would run.

Trudeau, 40, has represented the Quebec riding of Papineau since 2008.

The Liberals were reduced to third-party status for the first time in their history in the 2011 election, surpassed by the ascendant NDP.

Michael Ignatieff lost his own seat and resigned as leader almost immediately.
