Thousands lace up for Run for the Cure

Thousands of pink-clad runners laced up for one of the country’s largest breast cancer fundraisers on Sunday.

The 21st annual Run for the Cure took place in Toronto and 59 other communities across the country.

CFHI’s morning show hosts Erin Davis and Mike Cooper were the masters of ceremony for the event.

CityLine’s Tracy Moore and BT’s Jenn Valentyne laced up for the cause as well as CityNews reporter Cynthia Mulligan, who says she considers herself a cancer graduate.

“I call myself a graduate because to me survivor means you barely scraped through. Graduate means you got through it and you learned along the way,” she explained.

Toronto’s five-kilometre run started at 10 a.m. Sunday — a one-kilometre walk, about 15 minutes later — at the University of Toronto’s downtown campus and was to be followed by a pink pancake breakfast, pink Vespa raffle and awards ceremony.

The 2011 event raised more than $30 million to fund research, education and awareness programs.

This year, Toronto alone raised $4.3 million.

According to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, the disease will affect one in nine Canadian women.

The organization estimates 22,700 Canadian women and 200 Canadian men will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year.
