18 names added to Ontario Firefighters Memorial

Eighteen more names were added to the Ontario Firefighters Memorial during a solemn ceremony at Queen’s Park on Sunday.

Bagpipers played as family members and colleagues came from across the province to honour those who had died in the line of duty.

Christian Eldon, 7, remembered his father Richard Eldon, who died of cancer earlier this year.

“I really remember how good of a dad he was,” Christian said.

“He always used to do good things to us that our mom never let us do.”

Premier Dalton McGuinty also spoke during the service.

“These firefighters have paid the ultimate sacrifice, upholding our highest ideal: that no one of us is alone,” he said.

“In times of crisis, when we face real dangers, we are there for each other.”

The memorial, which shows a firefighter carrying a child, now has 574 names.
