MacFarlane said Monday he’ll do his “utmost to live up to the high standards” of his predecessors.

MacFarlane, 38, recently hosted the season premiere of Saturday Night Live (SNL) and is known for his edgy animated projects, including Family Guy and American Dad. He enjoyed box office success with Ted, which raked in more than US$420 million.

The actor/animator/writer can also sing. He released an album of big band tunes last year. He sang during his opening monologue on SNL last month.

The 2013 Oscars will be held Feb. 24 at the Dolby theatre at Hollywood and Highland Centre. Academy Award nominations will be announced Jan. 10.
