Daily Bread Food Bank still short of Thanksgiving drive goal

If you’re sitting down for a Thanksgiving feast this weekend, keep in mind Daily Bread Food Bank still needs help to make sure others have a meal as well.

So far, the food bank is only one-third of the way to its Thanksgiving holiday drive goal.

By Monday morning, donors had given $265,000 and 155,000 pounds of food – but that’s far from Daily Bread’s target of $400,000 and 400,000 pounds of food by next weekend.

While Daily Bread says it doesn’t need any more volunteers for sorting and packing, it still needs food and cash donations.

“Many people who are working are having a really hard time making it,” said executive director Gail Nyberg. “With increases in gas prices and food prices and rent, many people have been pushed over that limit and are now forced to use a food bank.”

The list of items needed includes baby formula, canned meats, canned fruit or vegetables, soups and stews, beans and lentils, macaroni and cheese and peanut butter.

“You know, when you come out of the summer the shelves in the warehouse are pretty bare,” Nyberg said.

She said after last year, the bank saw a four-per-cent increase in the number of people who need help.

“We served just about 800,000 people last year,” she said. “That’s a pretty big increase, and we’re still 18 per cent higher than where we were pre-recession.”

People can drop off food donations to any local fire hall or participating grocery store.

Daily Bread’s Thanksgiving drive ends Oct. 14.
