Man accused of beating family of raccoons appears in court

An avid gardener who allegedly attacked a family of raccoons with a wooden stick briefly appeared in court on animal cruelty charges on Wednesday.

The case was put over until Oct. 25.

Dong Nguyen’s arrest last year sparked both pro- and anti-raccoon rallies in Toronto, with many saying they understood his stance against the “destructive” animals.

Others posted flyers in Nguyen’s west-end neighourhood suggesting he and his family leave.

Nguyen, 53, allegedly attacked a mother and five of her babies in his backyard near Bloor Street West and Lansdowne Avenue on June 1, 2011.

Neighbours heard the animals screaming and called 911. Nguyen was arrested and charged with animal cruelty and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.
