Cineplex to open 3 adults-only VIP cinemas

Cineplex will open three adults-only VIP cinemas across the GTA in the next two years, including a standalone theatre at the Shops at Don Mills.

But it’s not just the movies that are rated R – the over-19 designation exists because the new theatres will be licensed.

Each of the three theatres will offer seat-side menu service, including alcohol, and the seats will be larger, Cineplex Inc. said in a statement Monday.

VIP screens will be added to existing cinemas at SilverCity Yonge-Eglinton and Cineplex Odeon Queensway Cinemas.

There’s already a VIP screen at the downtown Varsity theatre.  At the Varsity, VIP tickets are $19.99 – five dollars more than the $14.99 regular admission.

Pricing for the new theatres has not been announced.

“VIP Cinemas have been an overwhelmingly successful addition to our circuit,” Pat Marshall, Cineplex vice-president of communications and investor relations, said in statement.

“Our Toronto guests have long asked for more access to the VIP experience. Today, we are answering that demand.”

The Don Mills movie theatre, scheduled to open in 2014, will have five screens and cover 21,000 square feet.  At Yonge-Eglinton, three VIP auditoriums will be added to the existing nine auditorium facility by late 2014.

The Queensway location will have five VIP auditoriums and 15 traditional auditoriums by the end of 2013.
