Daughter appeals for witnesses in father’s death

The daughter of a man found dead in his Oshawa home made a public appeal for information on Wednesday.
Claudio Cara, 56, was found fatally stabbed on Waverly Road, near Rossland and Thornton roads, on Feb. 15. His son found his body.
“My father was a very kind, thoughtful, trusting man with a great sense of humour,” a crying Annalisa Cara said at Durham police headquarters.
“I had a very close relationship with him. He was teaching me Italian in preparation for a trip to Italy.”
The family had a Valentine’s Day tradition where Claudio would buy flowers and chocolate for his children. He “played Cupid” that night, Annalisa said, and the next day, he was dead.
“A place in my heart and soul is gone forever,” she said.
On Feb. 14, the night before he was killed, Claudio Cara was supposed to meet friends at a Swiss Chalet around 8 p.m. He didn’t see them and left alone, police said.
“This is in no way a cold case,” Det. Tom Dingwall said at the news conference.
Officers are trying to determine where Cara went and what happened after he left the restaurant.
Police know Cara purchased lottery tickets. It was not like him to take long drives alone and he likely met someone after leaving the restaurant, police said.
He was driving a black 2007 GMC Sierra pickup truck with personalized license plate CARA01.
Cara had recently retired from his job at a GM plant and was well-liked in the community, his daughter said.
Police said nothing had been stolen from the home.
Dingwall asked if anyone knew what Cara was doing on Feb. 14 to call police.
