5 things to do this weekend: Soupstock, Spanish dance & social at the ROM

For families: Michael Stadtlander, Jamie Kennedy and Susur Lee will join about 200 other chefs at Soupstock — an event to protest a proposed mega-quarry in Melancthon, 100 kilometres northwest of Toronto. They’ll serve soups which celebrate Ontario’s farmland, much of which they say will be gone if the project goes through. Woodbine Park. For visitors: It’s the first weekend of the International Festival of Authors — 11 days of readings, interviews, round-tables and book signings. Everyone from Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Junot Díaz to Canada’s former governor general, Adrienne Clarkson, will be there. Harbourfront Centre, 235 Queens Quay W. Oct. 18-28. For singles: Drink, dance and explore the ROM at Friday Night Live, a DJed party which, this week, also features live music performances and a waffle bar. Only adults 19 and older are allowed. For charity: Take part in the ultimate cardio workout — the 1,776-step CN Tower Climb for United Way. The event raises funds for health and social services in Toronto. For kicks: The Toronto International Flamenco Festival wraps up this Saturday after a week of free classes, performances and a film series at the Bloor Hot Docs Cinema. The award-winning Vamos Al Tiroteo on the festival’s last day will showcase the spellbinding Spanish dance form. Various locations. Until Saturday.
