Lutczyk’s bail hearing put over to Monday

A bail hearing for a former Oshawa city councillor allegedly involved in a bizarre two-day ordeal including an armed kidnapping and a police standoff has been put over until next week.

Robert Lutczyk, 45, is facing a slew of charges, including kidnapping, uttering threats and forcible confinement after a string of events that began Monday night.

During Lutczyk’s court appearance Thursday, the Crown asked for a three-day adjournment after the judge had to recuse himself because he knows the accused. Lutczyk will be in court again on Monday for his bail hearing.

Police allege Lutczyk abducted Oshawa city solicitor David Potts at gunpoint outside his home after a council meeting on Monday night.

The victim was forced into a vehicle, police said. Officers tracked the car down and Potts was freed, but the driver took off and ended up in an auto repair shop in an industrial area on Hopkins Street in Whitby. Potts wasn’t hurt.

Lutczyk then allegedly barricaded himself inside. The situation ended peacefully 27 hours later when he surrendered to police.

There’s no official word on what prompted the alleged abduction, but reports suggest there was a personal issue with Potts. Police said at a news conference he was upset with the city over the way some business matters were handled.
