Rob Ford launches city job fair

Mayor Rob Ford was on hand as the City of Toronto launched a job fair on Monday morning aimed at helping unemployed people find work.

Workforce Development Week kicked off at the Golden Mile Shopping Centre in Scarborough. The event runs until Friday.

“There are recruitment events, employment centre open houses and an information fair,” Ford said at the news conference.

“It is important to ensure unemployed people get the help they need to get back into the workforce,” he said.

Ford was joined by some of the city’s corporate partners at an employment and social services centre in the mall.

City council approved an initiative called the workforce development strategy in March to address persistent unemployment and shortages in certain sectors.

“It will help employers find skilled worker…and that will benefit Toronto’s economy,” Ford said.

In 2011, the city’s employment and social services division helped more than 33,000 people find jobs, he said.

The strategy adopted in March will allow the city to help even more people, Ford said.

In a release, the city said the strategy focuses on three key objectives including ensuring that employers’ workforce needs are addressed; and ensuring that unemployed residents get access to opportunities and jobs.
