Police launch traffic safety blitz

Toronto police launched a traffic safety blitz at 7 a.m. Wednesday targeting what they say are two particularly dangerous stretches of road.

The 12-hour sweep will run on Yonge Street from Highway 401 to Finch Avenue West, and along Bathurst Street from Steeles Avenue West to Finch Avenue West.

Last year in the area, people were injured in 1,182 collisions – and there were another 4,497 collisions with property damage. So far this year, there have been 721 personal-injury collisions and 3,109 property-damage collisions.

Police say they are looking for drivers using cellphones and other handheld devices, disobeying no-stopping zones and traffic signals, and creating gridlock.

Project Alert will end at 7 p.m.
