Evacuation order lifted at Canadian Embassy in Washington

The Canadian Embassy in Washington, D.C., was evacuated briefly Friday morning after a suspicious package was found in the building.

Police said a hazmat team was called in to check out an envelope containing a white substance. According to embassy staff, the U.S. Secret Service and other authorities were investigating as well.

Streets around the building on Pennsylvania Avenue were also shut down.

About 300 people work in the embassy, which has been evacuated in the past because of suspicious packages.

The building was cleared out twice in the past year for an earthquake and an electrical problem.
