Sarnia hydro worker dies repairing Sandy damage

A male hydro worker in Sarnia has died while repairing damage to lines following Superstorm Sandy, Sarnia police confirm with CityNews.

The worker died just after 10 a.m Wednesday on Passingham Lane.

The Ministry of Labour is investigating the death.

The worker’s identity has not been released.

Ontario Energy Minister Chris Bentley offered his condolences to the family of the worker.

“I want to express my deepest sympathies to the family and friends of the hydro worker who lost his life today while on the job in Sarnia,” he said in a release.

“This terrible tragedy shows the dangers that hydro workers across Ontario face every day as they dedicate themselves to delivering and maintaining the electricity that keeps our homes and businesses functioning. I would also like to extend my condolences to the Bluewater Power family.”

It’s the second death being attributed to Sandy in Ontario this week. On Monday a woman in her 50s was killed in Toronto’s west end when part of a Staples sign came loose in high winds and hit her on the head.

Police say winds were being clocked at around 65 km/h at the time. An investigation at the Staples store near Keele and St. Clair continues.
