Ontario malls to open early on Black Friday

Some Ontario malls, including Toronto’s Eaton Centre, will open earlier on Black Friday to compete with U.S. retailers during one of the busiest shopping days in North America.

The day after American Thanksgiving kicks off the holiday season and Canadian businesses are trying to keep customers on this side of the border – especially after the federal government relaxed its cross-border shopping rules in June.

This year, Black Friday falls on Nov. 23.

Cadillac Fairview is opening nine of its Ontario malls early on Nov. 23, including Toronto’s Fariveiw Mall, Sherway Gardens and Shops at Don Mills. Those malls will all open at 7 a.m.

The Eaton Centre will open at 6 a.m.

Fairview Park in Kitchener, Limeridge in Hamilton, Markville in Markham, Masonville in London and Promenade in Thornhill will open at 7 a.m.

Earlier this year, the Canadian government allowed travellers coming back after 24 hours away to bring back $200 worth of goods free of duty or taxes, an increase from just $50.

People gone more than 48 hours are allowed $800 in duty-free goods, double the present $400 allowance.

There is no longer any specified seven-day limit on duty-free purchases.
