Virtual toy store launched under Toronto’s financial district

It’s a new way to window shop. With less than two months to go before Christmas, Walmart and Mattel have launched a virtual toy store in the PATH, Toronto’s underground business district.

Customers can buy items during their morning commute by using their smartphone. Each item comes with a QR code – a barcode that can be recognized by special software – and with a quick scan, the item can be purchased and shipped, free of charge, from Walmart.

“Mobile commerce is taking off. In fact, the most recent statistics show that four out of five consumers use smartphones to shop,” said Melissa Chau, brand manager at Mattel Canada.

The store, which will be located near the entrance to Union Station at Brookfield Place, features two walls of three-dimensional toy images.

The store opened Monday and will close on Dec. 5.
