Funeral held for Oshawa teen killed in Halloween prank

A funeral was held Saturday for an Oshawa teen who was killed in a Halloween prank.
Nicholas King, 14, was fatally shot by his best friend in Indianapolis, Ind., on Oct. 30.
His parents, Max and Lori King spoke to CityNews about their loss.
“My son’s not coming home tomorrow. He’s not going to walk in the door and say ‘somebody’s home who loves you.’ That was his line,” his mother said outside the Oshawa Funeral Home where her son’s funeral was held.
King, who friends described as a fun-loving guy who loved sports and dreamed of becoming an aircraft mechanic, is survived by his parents and an older sister.
The 15-year-old boy who shot King said he was trying to scare him with a gun he didn’t know was loaded. A round went off, striking King in the neck.
King’s mother says she holds no anger toward the boy.
“I’m angry that there was a gun in the house. I’m not angry at Nick’s friend. It was an accident. He didn’t know it was loaded,” she explained.
King’s father says the whole event is a tragedy on so many levels.
“We don’t want his best friend to not live out his life. It’s important to us that nobody else loses their life over this,” he said.
The teen, who can’t be identified because of his age, has been charged with reckless homicide and is in a juvenile detention centre.
Police believe King went to his friend’s house because his friend’s older stepbrother had recently bought a 7.62-calibre rifle on Craigslist.
The 15-year-old opened the door to King and shot him. The stepbrother called 911, but paramedics couldn’t save King and he died at the scene.
Police charged his 18-year-old stepbrother, Kevin Edwards, with criminal recklessness.
During their investigation, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department seized as evidence the loaded rifle, which they found on the kitchen table, and the spent round, which sat behind a sofa.
