Woman accused of botched cosmetic procedure gets bail

A woman, who was charged after a botched cosmetic procedure allegedly left a client with “debilitating” injuries last summer, has been granted bail.
Marilyn Ely Reid, 46, of Newmarket, was charged with criminal negligence causing bodily harm. She appeared in court Friday where she was freed on a $5,000 surety bond.
At a news conference earlier Friday, Det. Louise Farrugia said, “The patient cannot sit on her backside. She can barely walk.”
Police allege the woman received several injections in her buttocks from the accused in a home. The woman fell ill immediately and was taken to hospital on Aug. 29.
She was treated with antibiotics, but her condition worsened. Eventually, she needed surgery to remove the injected substance.
“It’s a procedure where people would want to enhance the shape of their buttocks. The victim was hoping that that would happen. It did not. She’s received debilitating injuries,” Farrugia said.
Police believe the accused advertised her plastic surgery services – including buttock, lip and muscle augmentations and Botox injections – on a website called pmmainjection.com.

The “pmma” refers to the substance, polymethylmethacrylate, used in the procedure.
Police say the accused met clients either at their home or in a hotel room. The patients paid cash, sometimes in the tens of thousands of dollars.
“This procedure should be done in a medical facility under the direction of a surgeon. An anesthesiologist also has to be present and the standard of care has to be explained to the patient,” Farrugia said.
Officers believe there may be more victims.
Reid is expected to appear in court Dec. 21.
She is not allowed to perform any medical procedures, or process the pmma product and must shut down her website, as part of her bail conditions.
