Grey Cup festivities continue with pep rally, plaque unveiling

Grey Cup festivities continued in Toronto on Tuesday with a pep rally at Yonge-Dundas Square and a plaque unveiling at the University of Toronto’s Varsity Centre, among other events.
The 10-day festival, which began late last week, celebrates the 100th Grey Cup championship game that will be played between the Argonauts and the Stampeders on Sunday at Rogers Centre in Toronto.
CFL commissioner Mark Cohon, federal Environment Minister Peter Kent and government Leader Peter Van Loan attended the Varsity Centre event on Tuesday morning where they unveiled a plaque commemorating the historic significance of the Grey Cup.
At 6 p.m., an Argos pep rally began at Yonge-Dundas Square in downtown to celebrate the Argo’s East Division win. Fans got a chance to see the whole team, including Ricky Ray and Chad Owens.
The event was hosted by Mark “Strizzzy” Strong. The team’s own band, the Argonotes, plus the St. Michael’s College Drumline paraded through the square. The Argos cheerleaders were also on hand to help energize the crowd.
Argos vice chair Mike “Pinball” Clemons delivered an inspiring speech to young people gathered at Yonge-Dundas Square on Tuesday afternoon before the main pep rally.
“Don’t tell me about records or awards, money or power. If you want to show me a truly great person, show me what that person has done for someone else,” he told the crowd.
“This is my challenge to you: today I want you to make a point to do something for someone else.”
Pinball’s speech was part of an anti-bullying message being promoted by the Argos and others.
Sunday’s game will mark 30 years since the team played in a Grey Cup championship game in Toronto.
