Daycare kids more likely to be obese: study

A recent Quebec study makes a link between children who attend daycare and obesity.

Researchers from the University of Montreal found that kids who attend daycare, and kids who are cared for by an extended family member are at least 50 per cent more likely to become obese between the ages of four and 10.

After examining various risk factors, including socioeconomic status of parents, breastfeeding, the body mass index of mothers and employment status of mothers, researchers weren’t able to pin down why the daycare kids in their study were at a higher risk of being overweight or obese.

Are your children in daycare and are you satisfied with the meals and levels of physical activity they receive there? Is your daycare proactive in promoting healthy lifestyle choices? How do they do it?

And, is this a problem that should be investigated further by daycare providers and the government, or do parents need to do more to ensure their kids are eating nutritious meals and getting enough exercise at home?

Let us your thoughts on the controversial study in the comments below, or you can share your response here.
