Elizabeth May awarded Parliamentarian of the Year

The 6th annual Parliamentarians of the Year awards was held Wednesday evening at the Château Laurier hotel in Ottawa.

The event honoured Canada’s top Members of Parliament as voted by their peers in the House of Commons.

Maclean’s and L’actualité also selected one politician to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award. The winner was Preston Manning, former MPP for Calgary Southwest and former Leader of the Reform Party.

There were seven awards up for grabs at the event:

Parliamentarian of the Year: Elizabeth May, Green Party MP for Saanich-Gulf Islands, British Columbia

Hardest working: Kirsty Duncan, Liberal, Etobicoke North, Ontario.

Best Orator: Hon. Bob Rae, Liberal, Toronto Centre, Ontario

Most Collegial: Peter Stoffer NDP, Sackville-Eastern Shore, Nova Scotia

Most Knowledgeable: Right Hon. Stephen Harper, CP, Calgary Southwest, Alberta

Rising Star: Michelle Rempel, CP, Calgary Centre-North, Alberta

Best Represents Constituents: Niki Ashton NDP, Churchill, Manitoba

Ipsos Reid asked all members of Parliament to nominate the best MP’s in each of seven categories. MP’s cast votes for members both in and outside their parties.

The votes were converted to a point system to ensure that larger parties did not have an advantage. The MP who received the most points in each category won. The MP who earned the highest number of total points was named Parliamentarian of the Year.
