More Sally Ann toys recovered in 2 new raids

Police have recovered more of the 100,000 toys stolen from the Toronto Salvation Army’s east-end warehouse.
Police say 122 storage bins of toys worth $24,000 were found Thursday during raids at two locations: 51 Orfus Rd., near Dufferin Srreet and Lawrence Avenue West, and 2300 Lawrence Ave. E., near Kennedy Road.
No arrests were made in those raids and police do not believe the owner of the two locations was involved in the theft.
Last week, the Salvation Army said that David Rennie, the executive director of Sally Ann’s Railside Road warehouse, was fired after an internal audit — prompted by a whistle-blower in August — revealed $2 million worth of toys as well as food and other donated products were taken over a 24-month period from that warehouse.
Last Friday, two other search warrants in the GTA recovered 176 skids of toys from warehouses in Brampton and Toronto.
On Monday, Rennie, 51, of Toronto, surrendered to police and was charged with numerous criminal offences, including theft over $5,000 and possession of stolen property in the toy thefts.
Police allege Rennie would take portions of the shipments into the Railside warehouse and either control the donations, or direct them through the wholesale company Northern Sales Group so they didn’t even come into the warehouse.
Another man, Umaish Ramrattan, 61, of Ajax, who incorporated Northern Sales Group, was arrested and charged Wednesday.
The stolen goods were destined for sale at flea markets and other outlets in Toronto.
