Khairi sentenced to life for wife’s murder

Peer Khairi was sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 15 years for the brutal 2008 murder of his wife Randjida Khairi.
He slit her throat and stabbed her several times on March 18. He was found guilty of second-degree murder on Nov. 11, 2012, a conviction that comes with an automatic life sentence.
Justice Robert Clarke ruled Monday that Khairi, 65, must serve 15 years before he’s eligible for parole.
The court heard Randjida Khairi, 53, had wanted to leave her husband and that they’d fought over how to raise their six children, with Randjida allowing more permissive behaviour.
She had reached out to a friend for help and was receiving counselling from an Afghani community group about a possible divorce.
One of the couple’s children, 29-year-old daughter Giti, gave emotional testimony during the trial, claiming her parents fought over money and never forced cultural traditions on her.
Khairi admitted to attacking his wife of 30 years, but claimed he’d done so after she insulted him and threatened him with a knife. His lawyer argued he suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder and depression and was having a hard time adapting after moving to Canada from Afghanistan in 2003.
