Honda Civic, Ford F-350 among Canada’s most-stolen vehicles

The Ford F-350 is among Canada’s most-stolen vehicles – in fact, the popular truck showed up four times in the top 10 list – but the Honda Civic is still the most-prized find for thieves.
Honda Civic models from different years were No. 1 and No. 2 on the list published by the Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) on Thursday.
There were four F-350 models on the list – again, all from different years – and they were accompanied by other four-wheel and all-wheel drive vehicles.
Seven of the top 10 are all-terrain vehicles.
“We are never surprised to see a lot of all-terrain vehicles on the list,” said Rick Dubin, vice-president of investigative services at IBC.
“Many of these higher-end vehicles are targeted by organized crime for shipment overseas – to places like West Africa, the Middle East and Eastern Europe, where there is a lucrative market for big, rugged vehicles.”
While the Honda Civics are typically chopped up and used for parts, many of the Ford trucks are given a new vehicle identification number (VIN) and sold in western Canada.
“Alberta seems to be emerging as a secondary market for these vehicles,” Dubin said.
Overall, the number of stolen vehicles fell from 2011, down 12 per cent to 82,411 vehicles.
“We’re fighting these sophisticated crime rings on several fronts,” Dubin said.
“IBC works with Canada Border Services Agency to stop stolen vehicles at the ports in Montreal and Halifax before they are exported. Since 2009, over $44 million worth of stolen vehicles intended for export have been seized as a result of this partnership.”
