Most Canadians not finished Christmas shopping: poll

When it comes to Christmas shopping, hitting the stores sooner rather than later pays in more ways than one.

A survey conducted by CIBC shows 64 per cent of Canadians haven’t completed their Christmas shopping — 20 per cent of them admit they’ll likely go over budget in the last-minute rush.

The poll of 932 Canucks conducted by Harris/Decima up to Dec. 18 shows the average holiday shopping budget is $890. Those who got a late start said they’ve spent an average of $692 so far.

“These next few days will be busy for many Canadians, making it important to keep an eye on your spending as you cross those final items off your list,” Colette Delaney, CIBC’s executive vice president, said in a statement.

“One of the best gifts you can give yourself this holiday season is the confidence of starting the new year in good financial shape, and that means sticking to your budget as you wrap up your shopping.”

One popular item for shoppers is the latest version of Nike’s popular Air Jordan shoes that hit store shelves Friday.

Dozens of shoppers lined up before sunrise outside a downtown Yonge Street Foot Locker for the chance to fork over $265 for a pair of Air Jordan Retro XIs.

The shoe frenzy was much more intense south of the border, where police in Fort Worth, Tex. used pepper spray to control a crowd at a mall.

Air Jordans were first released in 1985.
