GTA hit with first major snowstorm of the season

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for southern and eastern areas of Ontario, as the first major snowstorm of the season hits the GTA.

The anticipated weather, officially struck the region around 7 p.m.

According to the Environment Canada, Dunnville, Niagara and the area between Kingston and Cornwall will receive the worst of the storm, getting 15 to 20 centimetres of snow with poor visibilities due to blowing snow. Winter storm warnings have been issued for those areas, as well as for Hamilton.

Toronto will see heavier snow accumulation on Thursday morning, CityNews weather specialist Stella Acquistoo said, with about 5-10 centimetres of snow expected.

Peter Noehammer, director of transportation services for the city of Toronto says they are ready for the snowy road conditions.

“We’ve been tracking this storm for a few days now and we’re ready with our crews and our contractors,” said Noehammer. “First we’ll send out our salters to keep the roads and sidewalks safe and then as the snow starts accumulating we’ll send out our plows.”

The plows will be set out once 2 centimeters of snow accumulates on the ground.

Poor visibility due to blowing snow has already had an impact drivers. At least one collision, involving a tractor-trailer, has been blamed on the weather.

OPP Sgt. Woodford reminded motorists that if they are on the roads to remember to drive according to the conditions, slow down and keep a safe distance.

Dozens of flights have been delayed or cancelled at Pearson. Check the status of your flight here.

The storm is expected to subside Thursday afternoon.
