Toronto fire fighters donate gifts to family after Boxing Day fire

Toronto fire fighters donated gifts to a family after a fire broke out in their home on Boxing Day.

The two-alarm blaze happened Wednesday morning at a townhouse in the Dupont and Dundas streets area.

“I hope this helps a little bit,” Fire officals told the family after handing over bags with toys and other gifts.

“The family has lost quite a few of their Christmas gifts. The Toronto Fire Fighers Association has come togehter and donated toys that we have for this purpose,” explained Chief Don McLaren. Media personnel on scene also donated money to the family.

Travis Romagno, 16, who lives in the home with his mother, stepfather and seven siblings, told CityNews he was home when the fire broke out.

“They said it was an electrical fire,” he explained. “It spread from my mom’s room to my sister’s room.”

Romagno said he and his stepfather ran upstairs to try to put the fire out but when they found they couldn’t they rushed everyone out of the house to safety.

He said his home was heavily damaged in the fire.

“It’s all black, even the walls are black. As soon as you walk in there’s water all over the floor.”

Several windows on the upper level of the home was smashed. Officials say the family won’t be allowed back home for at least a few days.

No other homes were damaged in the fire.
