City launches public consultations on casino

The City has launched its public consultations on an increasingly contentious issue — bringing a casino to Toronto.

Five sessions will be offered for people to learn more about the consultation process, join discussions on key topics, speak with staff and provide input.

Members of the public are invited to drop in any time during the following open houses:

  • Wednesday, January 9: Rotunda, Toronto City Hall, 100 Queen St. W, 6 to 9 p.m.
  • Saturday, January 12: North York Memorial Hall, 5110 Yonge St., 1 to 4 p.m.
  • Monday, January 14: Etobicoke Olympium Gymnasium, 590 Rathburn Rd., 6 to 9 p.m.
  • Thursday, January 17: Scarborough Civic Centre Rotunda, 150 Borough Dr., 6 to 9 p.m.
  • Saturday, January 19: Bluma Appel Salon Reference Library, 789 Yonge St., 1 to 4 p.m.

Until January 25, members of the public can also get information, download materials and provide their input at http://www.toronto.ca/casinoconsultation.

Torontonians are also encouraged to fill out the online feedback form at https://surveys.dpra.com/casino/CasinoSurvey.aspx.

The findings of the consultations will be presented to City Manager Joe Pennachetti to assist in the preparation of his report to Toronto’s Executive Committee, the city said in a release.

The Executive Committee will consider a casino at its meeting on March 20.

The Canadian Gaming Association (CGA) released a statement, welcoming the public’s input, saying the process will “enable Torontonians to have their say, which includes the completion of feedback forms, workbooks, and participation in community discussions over the next three weeks.”

The CGA says bringing a casino to the city will create around 6,000 construction jobs and support up to 12,000 permanent positions once it’s up and running.
