Accused in hit-&-run that killed Toronto teacher in court Wednesday

The man accused in a fatal hit-and-run crash that killed a popular Toronto elementary school teacher is in court on Wednesday.

Miguel Oliveira, 22, faces a single charge of failing to stop at the scene of an accident causing death.

Tom Samson, 35, was killed while cycling in the city’s west end on Nov. 23, 2012. He was cycling through the intersection of Lansdowne Avenue and Davenport Road when he was hit, allegedly by Oliveira’s minivan.

Samson was a Grade 2 teacher at Swansea Junior and Senior Public School.

Oliveira, a landscaper and a single father, surrendered to police the next day. He also handed over his van.

He has no prior convictions and there have been no allegations of impaired driving.

Oliveira has been out on bail since Nov. 26. Under his bail conditions, he cannot drive. He is under house arrest except to go to work or to court.
