Glen Murray drops out of Ontario Liberal leadership race

Glen Murray, the first candidate to throw his hat in the ring, has dropped out of the race for the Ontario Liberal leadership.

The former Winnipeg mayor and current Toronto-Centre MPP threw his support behind Kathleen Wynne on Thursday.

“She’ll make a very fine leader for our party and the best premier we can possibly produce,” Murray said on the CityNews Channel.

“She very kindly announced that if she wins, I will be a senior member of her cabinet,” he said.

Murray, 55, said the next premier will need to connect with people across the province, an ability, he said, that Wynne has. He also praised her intellect, her policy mind and her “pragmatic organizational skills.”

“She’s someone people will trust,” he said.

Murray announced his bid at Toronto’s Maple Leaf Gardens on Nov. 4.

He had previously served as Ontario minister of training, colleges and universities.

Premier Dalton McGuinty stepped down as party leader on Oct. 15, 2012, the same day he prorogued the legislature. The Liberals were facing a second contempt motion over the two cancelled power plants that cost taxpayers at least $230 million.

There are now six candidates in the race, and a winner will be chosen at a leadership convention in Toronto on Jan. 25-27.
